Tracks
Lindy Hop
Lindy hop is an energetic and rhythmical dance that emerged in the African-American communities in Harlem, New York, during the late 1920’s. It became a dance craze with the popularisation of jazz music by artists like Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Benny Goodman and countless others.
In Lindy Hop both partners are invited to improvise within the flow of the dance and to have an equal voice. Lindy Hop is now growing faster than ever all over the planet with dance communities and festival almost in every major city.
Balboa
Balboa was born in California in the second half of the 1920’s. The music of choice is uptempo swingmusic. Balboa gives the dancers challenging footwork and a sweet connection, rewarded with a floating feeling.
Balboa was danced in crowded ballrooms, which led to most of the dance to happen in closed position focusing on sophisticated partner connection and fancy footwork. This is nowadays called Pure Bal. With time, dancers started opening the tight closed position and integrating flashier moves, know as Bal Swing.
Solo Jazz & Charleston
Solo Jazz & Charleston has its roots in authentic swing and jazz dance styles dating back to the 1920s to 1940s. The dance gets its inspiration from African-American roots and various styles of jazz music - big band swing, rhythm ‘n’ blues, and be-bop, to name a few.
In Solo Jazz & Charleston we jam together, discover old-school jazz steps, learn short choreographies, and find ways to self-expression.
The swing dance community is now growing faster than ever all over the planet. If you feel the calling, hop in!
Tap
Tap dancing is a highly rhythmical and percussive dance style. You’ve probably seen it in movies like Happy Feet, La La Land, and Singin’ in the Rain.
Some famous dancers to know are The Copasetics, Bill ”Bojangles” Robinson, Jeni LeGon, Nicholas Brothers, Jimmy Slyde, Eleanor Powell, Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly, Gregory Hines, and Savion Glover.
At BPS we mostly do the tap to swing/jazz music. So if you’re into that, our course would suit you better than well!
Levels
These level descriptions are written with Lindy Hoppers in mind, but are also applied to Balboa, Solo Jazz & Charleston, and Tap dancers.
Beginners
Your dance journey starts here.
Goal: Learn the basics to be able to join social dance parties after first few weeks of classes.
Duration: 1 season (with free re-take if needed)
No previous experience whatsoever needed. No partner required.
We guarantee everybody learns to dance with us - yes, also so!
If you need more practice, you can retake Lindy Hop Beginners free of charge as many times as you like.
All our Lindy Hop Beginners courses are ELEF (everybody leads, everybody follows). This is our proven method to get deeper understanding of this partner dance right from the start.
Improvers
Improvers is the next level and natural continuation after Beginners.
Goal: Have a complete basic understanding of Lindy Hop.
Duration: 1 season, but many like to do it twice
From this level on you can decide if you want to keep on practising both roles or focus only in one role.
Intermediate
Intermediate is the next level after Improvers.
Goal: Dancing becomes life-style and you feel like you finally “get it”.
Duration: 1 year or more
From Intermediate level and onwards classes are often “workshop-style” classes, they don’t follow any specific curriculum.
These classes offer you lots of inspiration and challenges to grow as a dancer. Changing themes and content are based on the group and teachers’ assesment.
On this level we expect dancers to know their basics. If you still find the content on Beginners or Imporvers courses challenging, repeat it one more season before advancing to Intermediate level.
Int-Adv
Int-Adv level is for dancers who are ready to advance into more serious grounds.
Goal: Become a competent dancer with a unique style.
Duration: min. 1 year, usually longer
On Int-Adv level we expect dancers to be pro-active and have goals for their dancing.
Usually on this level people have plenty of practice hours behind them. Practicing will be taken more seriously, where dedicated practice hours outside social dancing and classes are seen necessity.
They start speaking in “dance jargon” comfortably, and has sharp analysis on the dance itself.
Advanced
We offer Advanced level on various workshops. Advanced dancers will get lots of inspiration and challenge on Int-Adv level too.
Goal: Work towards ultimate proficiency and mastery.
Duration: has no duration - learning continues forever
Advanced level dancer is someone who is fluent, their dance flows without thinking. Your vocabulary, attention to details, and practicing skills reflect that.
The biggest challenge on this level is to work through many stages of plateau, lost motivation, and other blocks that try to test you. It’s still a long way from Advanced to Mastery. And only way there is staying focused and keep on track.
On Advanced training programs we help you on your way to mastery.
SPECIALS / Training
At Lindy training we will work on the basic skills we need for Lindy Hop.
We will do drills, exercises and games to improve rhythm, coordination, footwork, partner connection, and overall body awareness.
This is an Intermediate onwards course for those who like to practice intensively.
Attendees are expected to know triple-steps and charleston; and some of the basic moves (swing-out, send-out, tuck turn, hand to hand, tandem)
